About Rock & Tile

From humble beginnings in 1982, Rock & Tile continues today to be a family owned, family run business. It has evolved from a one-man, contract installation business into one of the region's most respected resources for quality tile, marble, and stone.

It all began with the purchase of a wet saw and some leftover ceramic tile stock, over twenty-five years ago. Phil McDonald, owner and founder, worked out of his home in the startup years. Originally known as Custom Tile & Marble, the company specialized in custom installations of high-end ceramic tile, marble, and granite. In 1986 the business moved to Jefferson Avenue in Charles Town, West Virginia, expanding into retail and wholesale tile, marble, and granite sales. Over the years, as new varieties of natural stone were gradually added to the product line, it became apparent that the business would soon outgrow its location.

In 1994, Custom Tile & Marble moved from Jefferson Avenue to its location on Chevrolet Drive and became Rock & Tile. The move greatly facilitated the expansion of the stoneyard and made room for a granite and marble fabrication shop. While Rock & Tile no longer does contract tile installation, it has become the area's leading purveyor of superb marble and granite products and extensive stone and tile offerings, with residential and commercial installations showcased throughout West Virgnia, Virginia, and Maryland.

Rock & Tile proudly moved to its new location on Route 340 North in Charles Town in May of 2008. The larger location boasts a 3,000 square foot showroom and a 3 acre stoneyard. Innovative new tile and stone products have been added to their listings and previously offered materials are now showcased in exciting and imaginative ways! Dimensional stone products, such as granite and marble slabs, are also conveniently displayed in the extensive stoneyard.

Two generations of the McDonald family continue to direct the daily operations at Rock & Tile. Julia, Phil's daughter, manages the showroom and stoneyard, while Phil oversees the general operations and the dimensional stone division. Together, with their other Rock & Tile employees, they enjoy helping others realize their dreams in designing and creating exciting, innovative stone and tile installations in all settings!
